On Sunday, March 10, 2013, the Storm Varsity hockey team entered the Lawrence Middle School to take on the MTA Lions in a Western Conference showdown for the MYHSHL Varsity championship. The Lions handed the Storm their only 2 losses of the regular season, a 2-0 defeat at the Weather Center and a 3-2 last second heartbreak in the Lion's Den.
The Varsity soccer team opened the new season against a much improved and very physical JEC team. The Storm was shorthanded, having lost 5 players to injuries. The rest of the team picked up the slack, playing a very intelligent, well organized game, and capitalized on most of the opportunities to score, especially early in the game. In the 4th quarter the starters began to run out of steam but the rest of the guys stepped in and kept the game under control. Everyone on the team contributed to a well-deserved 9-7 victory. A total team effort and a character builder.
Congratulations to Coach Norm Blumenthal on leading the JV Storm hockey to an unprecedented, record setting 5th straight JV Hockey championship! It would be easy enough to just write the final score was 3 - 2, but we all know there was so much more to this victory than the goals.
Under the threat of an impending snowstorm, the Storm varsity basketball team and their fans boarded their bus and made the long trip to Brooklyn, NY to face the #2 seeded Magen David Warriors in this quarterfinal matchup. With TABC slowing down the game and a bit of nerves for both teams, the first quarter ended in a 5-4 lead for the Storm. As the Storm's defense was smothering the high powered MDY offense, Alex Hirt ('14) (6 pts) and Marty Spiewak ('13) accounted for 6 of the 7 points scored in the 2nd quarter and MDY evened the score at 12 going into the half.
In a heated playoff battle that seems to have become an annual event either in JV or Varsity, the Varsity Storm Hockey team welcomed the HAFTR Flames on Monday night for a matchup to determine who will be headed to the Lawrence Middle School for the MYHSHL championship game. The Storm were coming off a high energy quarterfinal game in which they were able to defeat the Rambam Ravens 3-1, using stifling defense, excellent goaltending and timely offense.
Congratulations to coach Norm Blumenthal on leading his JV Storm Hockey team to their (and his!) league-record 5th straight trip to the championship! In a game they completely dominated from the 5-minute mark of the first period forward, the Storm soundly defeated Ramaz for the third time this season, this time by the score of 6 - 2.
Varsity Hockey played Rambam in the first playoff game. It was a tough first period for the Storm down by one goal but in the second period we came alive with a goal from Benjy Lankin ('14) followed by Shmuel Knoller ('13). In the last period, Aryeh Pechet ('14) gave us our final goal of the game giving the Storm a 3-1 win.
Varsity Basketball: A huge crowd filled the Storm Center for the first round playoff game. TABC came out shooting with Alex Hirt ('14) (9 pts, 5 assists) connecting on a trey to give TABC an early 3-0 lead. However, after 2 treys of their own, Heschel owned a 6-3 lead and would later increase that to 12-7.
TABC made history on Monday afternoon when the school's wrestling team won the Henry Wittenberg National High School Championships. Named after the two-time Olympic champion, Henry Wittenberg and sponsored by Yeshiva University, the annual tournament takes place every Presidents' weekend and hosts yeshiva high school wrestling teams from across the United States.
JV Storm hockey began their quest for a fifth straight title with aresounding 6-2 victory over HAFTR. Ari Fuchs ('16) opened the scoring with a screened blast from the point midway through the first, off a beautiful feed from Daniel Levy ('16).
