Mishna
Students learn how to read and analyze the Mishna with the commentaries of Rabbi Ovadia Bartenura and Tosafot Yom Tov. They become familiar with the principles that form the basis of the halachot of Shabbot, Yom Tov, eruv, damages, fraud, ketuba, marriage and divorce.
The Mishna is studied in the 9th and 10th grades. One year focuses on selected Mishnayot in סדר מועד, particularly מסכת ביצה and מסכת שבת, and the next year focuses on selected Mishnayot in סדר נזיקין and סדר נשים with a strong emphasis on מסכת בבא קמא and מסכת כתובות.
Torah Academy is unique in that it offers a course that focuses exclusively on the study of Mishnayot. Mishna forms the basis of פסק הלכה (halachic rulings) without the in-depth analysis that is provided by Talmud study. Our graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to analyze the Talmud as well as the knowledge of a wide variety of halachic concepts that they have received from a two-year study of Mishnayot. They are better prepared to tackle a new piece of Gemara because they are already familiar with the halachic principles that the Gemara is discussing.
