In this course, students will learn the art of journalism. Students will be exposed to an array of journalistic forms, with a specific emphasis on digital and print newspapers. The class will explore articles of the following genres: news, features, opinions, art and culture, as well as sports, travel and science. Students will learn terminology relevant to the field and will produce articles for each genre. Much class time will be devoted to workshopping articles, where students will both give and receive feedback from their peers. Students will also have an opportunity to publish their work in TABC’s student newspaper, Eye of the Storm and in other local newspapers. This course is a great opportunity for those interested in the field of journalism or in improving their general writing and editing skills.

In this hands-on course, students will explore how music in all its forms, including classical and modern, works with visual imagery in movies, TV, and commercials to add to the total aesthetic experience. Using GarageBand for Mac, we will create and write music and set it to chosen visuals which can be uploaded into the GarageBand session. No prior instrumental learning is needed.

This course will introduce students to basic elements of art and design with a focus on developing drawing skills and painting techniques. Studio experiences in the classroom will give students opportunities to experience a variety of media (pen, pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, and tempera paint) and to be exposed to various art styles and genres.

Students will study famous directors and their favorite actors (Alfred Hitchcock & Tippi Hedren, Quentin Tarantino & Uma Thurman and Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio). Students will view their films and analyze the directors’ and actors’ choices. Students will learn the basics of film making and acting for the camera while crafting an original short film. The course will culminate in a “Movie Premier” where films will be viewed – to be followed by an actor and director talk back.
